Protect our rivers and floodplains

The future of our rivers are at a crossroads, and we need your help.

The NT Government has released a draft plan that would allow big business to take huge amounts of water for cotton, fracking and mining through ‘floodplain harvesting’ – taking water before it even reaches the riverbed. This is the same water management approach that led to the demise of the Murray-Darling, and could be disastrous for our Top End rivers.

Right now, the government is asking Territorians for their thoughts on this plan – this is our opportunity to tell them that our rivers shouldn’t be put at risk.

We all know that our rivers stretch far beyond the bank – and the floodplains that feed them are just as much a part of the river itself, and vital to their health. Top End river systems rely on big wet season rains and floods to sustain them throughout the year. This floodplain runoff supports an incredible diversity of unique plants, fish, birds, and other wildlife.

The NT is known around the world for its iconic natural treasures, including our free-flowing rivers. The government’s draft plan will lead to a rush of new dams on floodplains, meaning that massive amounts of water is taken from river systems like the Daly, Roper, and Katherine – threatening fishing, tourism, local communities and our Top End lifestyle.

It’s vital we get this right from the start. That means strengthened protections for rivers and floodplains, no extra water to be taken, and a guarantee that rivers and floodplains will remain healthy.

Now is the time to have your say. Tell the Government that any plan that allows more water to be taken from our rivers and floodplains is not good enough.
