Join us by emailing Minister Lawler and the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NTEPA) to immediately call in Santos and Origin’s fracking plans for public environmental assessment under the Environment Protection Act 2019 (NT).
Origin and Santos are right now seeking permission from the Gunner Government to drill 6 new wells for fracking in the Beetaloo Basin.
These are the latest of many fracking approvals handed out by the Northern Territory Government. Since the moratorium on onshore fracking in the Territory was lifted in April 2018, there have been 18 separate approvals given for gas exploration activities in the Beetaloo Basin alone.
Despite the extensive activities of gas companies across the Beetaloo Basin for many years, there has never been a public environmental impact assessment of these activities.
The gas industry is establishing itself by stealth, using fragmented, piecemeal approvals to entrench its presence without appropriate public scrutiny of its impacts.
This must stop.
The NTEPA has power to “call in” any projects that have the potential to have a significant impact on the environment for environmental impact assessment under the new Environment Protection Act 2020 (NT). It’s time for these new laws to be put to the test!
The drilling and fracking of new fracking wells, and other activities related to fracking, pose the following threats:(a) the risk of damage to cultural heritage, and land and waters subject to native title rights and interests;(b) the risk of contamination of groundwater;(c) the risk of contamination of surface water;(d) the risk of contamination to soils;(e) the risk of greenhouse gas emissions in the project area;(f) the risk of damage to threatened species in the project area; and(g) the risk of damage to flora in the project area.
The NTEPA should immediately call in Santos and Origin’s fracking plans for public environment assessment under the Environment Protection Act (NT), so that their activities can be subjected to transparent and scientific scrutiny.
To the NTEPA, we the undersigned call on you to immediately call in Santos and Origin’s fracking plans for public environmental assessment under the Environment Protection Act 2020 (NT).
