Implementation of the Environment Protection Act 2019 – Comments on Draft guidance documents
The NT EPA is developing a series of guidance documents to support this reform. The Environment Centre NT has been making submissions to these guidance documents to ensure that public submissions and concerns will be considered and incorporated into environmental decision-making. If there is more prescription about these matters, then public confidence in environmental decision-making by the NTEPA will be enhanced. In the past public participation in environmental decision-making in the Northern Territory has not been robust, with both proponents and sometimes the NTEPA pay scant attention to the public’s views in relation to environmentally harmful projects. The new Environment Protection Act 2019 and its implementation is an opportunity for improved transparency and rigour, building public confidence and trust in environmental decision-making in the Northern Territory.
