Join us to hear from Australia’s preeminent ecologists – Professor Brett Murphy (CDU), Professor Euan Ritchie (Deakin) and Professor John Woinarski (CDU) – as they present key findings from their new research and analysis on the impacts of current and proposed land clearing in the NT.
Hear from Senior Wagiman Traditional Owners, Jabul Huddleston and Theresa Banderson, about their fight to protect almost 6,000ha of Wagiman land currently under clearing application along the Daly River.
Never before has there been detailed analysis on the impacts of broadscale land clearing in the NT. The pursuit of a full-scale fracking industry, plans for a massive cotton industry, mining and other major developments such as Middle Arm, will result in thousands of hectares of deforestation.
The NT is the only jurisdiction without standalone land clearing laws. There is currently more than 29,000ha of habitat under clearing application in the NT. Permits for up to 5,000ha of clearing on the pastoral estate are routinely approved without any independent environmental oversight. What does the current push for massive agricultural and industrial developments mean for the NT’s savannas, in the current regulatory and policy context? This question requires definitive answers.
