Nightcliff by-election pledge 2026

Three out of four candidates in the Nightcliff by-election have signed a pledge to protect the Territory’s water and climate.

The Nightcliff by-election on Saturday 7 March comes as the fate of the Territory’s nature, water and climate hangs in the balance.

Ed Smelt (Labor), Suki Dorras-Walker (Greens) and Phil Scott (Independent) pledged to oppose the use of taxpayer money for fracking (including for fracking pipelines) and support the transition to 100% renewables in the NT to bring down energy bills and pollution.

Congratulations to those candidates! The voters of Nightcliff expect nothing less.

Anjan Paudel (CLP) did not respond to the survey.

Candidates' responses reflect strong community opposition to toxic fracking and a support for a transition to renewables that can deliver energy security and jobs for Territorians.

Too often we see politicians saying one thing and doing another, so we’ll be making sure whoever wins this by-election honours their commitment to protect our water and climate.

The Environment Centre NT is non-partisan. We will never issue advice on how to vote. We are committed to working with all sides of politics to protect the NT’s cherished nature and climate.

Authorised by Kirsty Howey, Environment Centre NT O800.
