Environment Centre NT and Beyond Gas Network have teamed up to support a group of Territorians to bring an urgent message down south: The Territory is under threat from gas expansion like never before.
For over a decade, Territorians have led the fight against this destructive industry, but now Country, water, and our climate are at greater risk than ever. You might have read about the grave risks associated with the Middle Arm gas and petrochemical hub proposed for Darwin Harbour, which would threaten our health, the Harbour, and our climate, and enable fracking in the Beetaloo Basin. Experts have estimated that the Middle Arm facilities alone could increase the NT’s emissions by 75% at a time when we need to be reducing emissions to zero.
Join us for a powerful event featuring NT Traditional Owners and Territorians who will share what these dangerous gas projects mean for their communities—and how you can stand in solidarity here in Victoria.
🔥 Why it matters: Much of the NT is predicted to be unliveable before the end of the century due to climate impacts, and the Federal Government is considering a $1.9 billion gas hub in Darwin, while failing to stop fracking in the Beetaloo Basin. Victorians banned fracking because we know the dangers—now it's time to support communities in the NT who are fighting to do the same.
The event will begin with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony from a Wurundjeri Elder on the banks of the Birrarung (Yarra River) before the panel discussion begins inside Koorie Heritage Trust.
Speakers include:
- Miliwanga Wurrben, Rembarrnga Traditional owner, healer and artist
- Adam Gaston, Mangarrayi man and advocate for Country
- Dr. Louise Woodward, NT paediatrician
- Dr Kirsty Howey, Executive Director Environment Centre NT
Hosted by Mililma May, with stalls from local climate action groups like Yarra Climate Action Network, Port Phillip Emergency Climate Action network, Lighter Footprints and Kooyong Climate Change Alliance.
RSVP and share to stand with Territorians and protect our future from dangerous climate impacts and gas expansion.
Please note that this event is organised in collaboration with the Beyond Gas Network - a volunteer network of grassroots climate action networks that originated in the east and south east of Melbourne. By RSVPing for this event you will receive updates from the Beyond Gas Network and local climate groups about activities in your area and the campaign. You can unsubscribe to opt out at any time.

This event will take place on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. We pay respects to their Elders past, present and emerging and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land, water and skies, and their ongoing resistance to the impacts of colonisation. There can be no climate justice without First Nations justice.
